Crete Holidays: Airports in Crete – Where to Go When Traveling to Crete

If you are going to be traveling on a holiday to Crete then you will need to get the right air transportation to the area. Because Crete is an island of Greece you will need to be able to get there through a plane. Fortunately, there are two different airports in Crete that you can fly to. When traveling to Crete you will be able to fly to either Heraklion or Chania.

First, there is an airport in Heraklion, the capitol of Crete. This airport is the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport, and it is about five kilometers away to the east from the center of Heraklion. It is generally in the central part of Crete. A majority of the flights that you would be able to choose from to get to the airport will be based out of Athens, which can be accessed through many international airports around the world.

All sorts of different airliners work at the airport in Heraklion. Air Greece and Olympic Airways are the most popular of these airliners in the area. Various airliners will also fly out of the area to other places in the world. For instance, Air Berlin has flights from the airport to various different airports in Germany. Other areas of Greece are directly linked through this airport as well, including Rhodes and Paros.

It should be noted that there is a Hellenic Air Force base at the Heraklion airport. Therefore, there may be some additional security involved in the area.

The other of the two airports to consider when traveling to Crete is the airport in Chania. The Chania International Airport is about fourteen kilometers easy of Chania, and it is about 140 kilometers away from Heraklion. This airport is a joint airport between civilians and the military. As a result you will probably experience a good amount of security at this airport.

You will be able to get to this airport through various different airliners like Air Greece and Condor, and many of the top destinations that are served through this airport are in the European Union. For instance, Sterling Airlines features flights to various destinations in Scandanavia.

It should be noted that there is no permanent transport services at the Chania airport. Therefore, you will need to get a taxi when you do get to the airport. There are car rental ports at the airport too, and this may be a better option if you are going to be doing a great amount of travel around the entire Crete area.

You should look to use one of these two airports in Crete when you are traveling to the area. These airports are essential to Crete in that they bring tourists and other visitors to the area. In fact, you can easily reach one of these airports through many international airports around the world.
