Crete Holidays: The Cities in Crete What to See in the Area If you are going on a Crete holiday, it would be practically criminal to skip seeing some of the cities on the island. There are several cities on Crete worth seeing, and are the best places to get an understanding of Cretan culture.

Here are some of the places you should visit on a Crete holiday. Of course, you'll want to visit the largest city of Crete, Heraklion. This is home to around 140,000 people, as well as the site of the ruins of Knossos. Dating to the Bronze Age, this is a well preserved site which is a must see for history buffs. Also not to be missed is Venizelous Square, which is very scenic as is Morosini Fountain. For the sports fan, Crete has two soccer teams, Ergotelis FC and OFI Crete. Both teams have their home matches at Pankritiko Stadium. Chania is another spot to see on a Crete holiday. Smaller than Heraklion, this town of 55,000 is located in the northwest part of the island. Be sure to see the Old Town while you're there, there are walls (and the harbor there) dating from the times of Venetian influence on the island. In the newer parts of the city, the Courthouse, the clock tower on Dimokratias Street, and the Public Gardens are all worth a look. One of the largest castles on Crete is to be found in Rethymno, which is also home to an annual Wine Festival in July; other intersting festivals are held in the town as well. If you're interested in attending the Wine Festival however. be sure to book ahead; it can be hard to find lodging during this very popular event. Lake Voulismeni should not be passed over. You'll find it near the town of Agios Nikolaos. Bronze Age ruins may be seen here as well. To get a feel for the culture of Crete, Agios Nikolaos is a place you should consider. Last, and smallest, but certainly not least is the town of Sitia. The eastern part of town, along the waterfront is the Kazarma, a fortress once occupied by the Venetians. The E75 runs by Sitia, making it an easy destination to get to. If you are planning a Crete holiday, these cities should all be on your list. Each has different historical sites and cultural attractions. There is a lot going on in these cities, and you'll want to take advantage of them while on a Crete holiday.
