Crete Holidays: The Climate in Crete

If you are planning a Crete holiday then you would probably be interested in going during a time of the year when the weather is comfortable for you. Fortunately, much of the climate in the Crete area is warm throughout the year. Here's a look at the climate in Crete and how it should be used for planning your holiday.

The warmest months in Crete are in the summer. From June to September the temperatures can reach around 30 degrees Celsius, or about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The summers are especially dry, as not much precipitation is expected during this time period every year. The lows in this time of year are around 20 Celsius or 68 Fahrenheit. Therefore, if you are more comfortable with warmer weather it will be better to go during the summer.

The coolest times of the year in Crete are not as cold as you may think. This is because of the traditionally warm climate that Crete has throughout the entire year. The winter months from December to March are the coolest months of the entire year. The average temperature in these times is 18 Celsius or 65 Fahrenheit. The lows here are around 10 Celsius or 50 Fahrenheit. If you are interested in planning a Crete holiday during these months you will definitely enjoy weather that is warmer than usual, but it is best to pack some additional clothes just for your safety.

Precipitation levels in Crete are higher during the winter months over any other time. According to the Weather Channel statistics January is the strongest month of the year for precipitation. It can get to about 35 inches or 90 centimeters in precipitation in January. February and December are the second strongest months for precipitation with about 76 centimeters or 30 inches. As mentioned earlier, there is practically no precipitation during the summer months. Also, in the mountain areas there is more of a likelihood of precipitation than in other places. Because of the generally warm weather there is very little chance that any snow will form.

Of course, depending on what part of Crete you are in the feel of the air will be different. In the lowland areas of Crete there are clear and dry conditions. In the mountainous areas of Crete the temperatures are cooler. Also, there is generally more rain in the mountain areas than any other part of Crete. The beaches are generally cool as well thanks to the waters in the area.

When planning a Crete holiday you should consider the climate in Crete. The temperature throughout the year is especially warm and is comfortable, and the precipitation levels are incredibly varied over the course of the year. When you are planning a Crete holiday be sure to pack accordingly for what you will be likely to experience.
